Northstar Mail legal
Terms built for a desktop app.
These terms describe the rules for using Northstar Mail, a local-first Windows application developed by TreeByte Software.
Effective July 18, 2026
1. Agreement and eligibility
By downloading, installing, or using Northstar Mail, you agree to these Terms of Use and the Northstar Mail Privacy Policy. If you do not agree, do not use the application.
You must be legally able to agree to these terms and comply with the rules of every mail, calendar, or contacts provider you connect. If you use Northstar for an organization, you confirm that you are authorized to do so on its behalf.
2. What Northstar provides
Northstar is desktop client software that connects to supported third-party account providers at your direction. TreeByte does not provide the email account, mailbox infrastructure, provider identity, or internet connection used by the app.
Features may change as Northstar is developed. Documentation and product pages describe the current intended behavior but are not a promise that a particular integration will always remain available.
3. Your accounts and authorization
You are responsible for the accounts you connect, the accuracy of setup information, and the security of your Windows device and account. You may connect only accounts you own or are authorized to access.
Provider authorization is controlled by the provider. You can remove an account locally in Northstar and separately revoke its provider grant. See the account removal instructions for both steps.
4. Acceptable use
You may not use Northstar to:
- Access an account or data without permission.
- Break applicable law or a connected provider's terms.
- Bypass security, account limits, licensing, or purchase controls.
- Distribute malware or use the app to interfere with another system.
- Reverse engineer the app except where applicable law expressly permits it.
- Misrepresent Northstar or TreeByte Software as your own service.
5. Privacy and local data
Northstar processes provider content locally on your PC rather than in a TreeByte mailbox cloud. Account settings and DPAPI-protected OAuth credentials are stored in your Windows profile. The privacy policy explains provider permissions, retention, deletion, and Google API Limited Use compliance.
6. Third-party services
Google, Microsoft, mail hosts, app stores, and other providers operate independently under their own terms and privacy policies. Their outages, API changes, account restrictions, security decisions, or discontinued features may affect Northstar. TreeByte does not control those services.
7. Licenses and purchases
Northstar and its original materials are owned by TreeByte Software and its licensors. Subject to these terms and any applicable store license, TreeByte grants you a limited, personal, non-exclusive, non-transferable license to use the app on compatible devices.
If a store offers a paid Northstar entitlement, pricing, payment, fulfillment, refund handling, and store account requirements are also governed by that store's terms. The app will identify the feature or account limit associated with an available purchase before checkout.
8. Updates and suspension
We may update Northstar to improve security, compatibility, and features. We may discontinue a version or integration when continued operation would create a security, legal, or provider-compliance risk. You may stop using the app and remove your locally configured accounts at any time.
9. Warranty disclaimer and limitation of liability
To the maximum extent permitted by applicable law, Northstar is provided “as is” and “as available,” without warranties of uninterrupted operation, error-free synchronization, compatibility with every message, or continued availability of a third-party API.
To the maximum extent permitted by law, TreeByte Software will not be liable for indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or punitive damages, or for loss of data, profits, business, or access arising from use of Northstar. Rights that cannot lawfully be excluded remain unaffected.
10. Changes to these terms
We may revise these terms when the product or legal requirements change. The effective date identifies the current version. If a change materially affects your rights, we will provide notice where reasonably practical.
