The game

The priests sealed you in stone and prayed over your grave for a hundred years. But prayers rot, and stone remembers.

You are the ancient evil buried beneath the holy kingdom of Vael, and you are waking up.

The Throne Below is a dark dungeon-management game in the spirit of the grim, gloomy classics of the 90s: no cute minions, no jokes, just torchlight, screams and the slow work of evil. Dig out your realm, raise a legion of monsters, break the captives the kingdom sends you, and keep your monstrous heart alive when the Order of the Pale Sun comes down to burn you out.

Features

The slow work of evil.

Mark the earth and your Thralls tear it open.

They dig, claim the ground for you, reinforce the walls and haul every scrap of gold back to your Vault. They grow quicker at it with every level.

Build rooms that call monsters.

Dens and Grub Pits keep your legion rested and fed, Blood Pits train them, Guard Posts set them watching the ways in, and a Sanctum unearths new rooms and powers. What you build decides what crawls out of the Rift.

The Order of the Pale Sun comes for you.

Footmen, archers, templars, magisters, inquisitors, paladins and zealots march through their gates. Delvers and sappers tunnel straight at your heart, scouts take your traps apart, and thieves come for your gold.

Ten kinds of servants, each with its own gift.
Ghouls devour what they kill, Gnashers pounce, Skinners leave wounds that keep bleeding, Occultists hex, Crawlers pin the faithful in their webs, Bloatfiends burst in acid when they die, and the dead get up again.
Possess any creature.
Look out through its eyes and fight in first person, and wield eight dark powers, including Hellfire, Collapse, Frenzy, Dark Mending and the Eye of Night.
The Maw is your heart.
If it dies, you die. It grows hungry: feed it the living, or it will take one of your own.
A campaign twelve realms deep.
Drowned cloisters, ash and lava, the catacombs of dead kings, a gilded treasury and the Order's own cathedral, each with its own ground, its own champion and its own way to win.
Another throne in the deep.
In a skirmish you face the Usurper, a rival evil that digs, breeds and raids. Tear out its Maw before it tears out yours. Or build whatever you like in the sandbox.
Made to be played in the dark.
A low-resolution, torch-lit look and a living soundscape of drips, chains and distant screams. Play in the dark. Headphones on.
